An upgrade should solve something you actually notice. For earphones, that might be the noise of a train, another charging break, or a fit that never feels quite right. Start there before looking at the longest feature list. This comparison covers the noise-cancelling version of AirPods 4; the standard model is a different purchase.

If you want a fit you can adjust… Pro 3 has the advantage
Apple gives the Pro 3 interchangeable ear tips, while AirPods 4 uses an open design. That distinction matters more than a name on a box. If you have disliked the sealed sensation of in-ear buds before, the Pro deserves a try before you commit. A return policy is particularly useful for something you cannot judge by looking at a photograph.
If charging interrupts your day… Pro 3 gets our vote
Apple lists up to eight hours of listening with noise cancellation for Pro 3, compared with four for AirPods 4 with ANC. Those are manufacturer test figures; settings and use affect the result. For someone who wants to put earphones in at the start of a journey and leave them there, the extra stated headroom is a practical reason to upgrade.
If you dislike silicone tips… AirPods 4 makes sense
A feature is only valuable when you want to use the product. There is little point buying the more expensive option if you keep taking it out. Our advice is to treat your own fit preference as a requirement, then consider the extras. Do not let a comparison chart talk you out of a shape you already know you prefer.
Before buying, check your phone
Read Apple's compatibility notes for the features you plan to use. Consider where you listen, how long you listen, and whether you need those features at all. Someone buying mainly for a short daily walk has a different brief from someone taking regular long flights.
The verdict: choose the fit, then the battery
Pro 3 is our recommendation when longer uninterrupted listening is the priority and an in-ear fit suits you. AirPods 4 with ANC remains the more sensible choice for an open-fit preference. Either way, a comfortable pair you use every day is a better purchase than an impressive specification you rarely enjoy.
