Sonos Roam 2 vs. Move 2: portable means two different things

One makes sense in a travel bag. The other earns its place at home. Match the speaker to the way you listen.

Buying guide based on published specifications. Our recommendations reflect the uses described below; this is not a hands-on test.

A portable speaker can mean something you carry to the garden, or something you take on a week away. Those are different jobs. The Roam 2 and Move 2 both sit in Sonos's portable range, but their specifications point to different priorities. Deciding where the speaker spends most of its time makes this comparison much easier.

Product facts: Sonos: Move 2 specifications · Sonos: Roam 2 specifications. Battery figures are manufacturer estimates where shown.

If it is going in a bag… Roam 2 wins

Sonos lists Roam 2 at approximately 0.43 kg. Our recommendation for travel starts with that practical detail: the speaker must be something you are willing to carry. Think about the walk from the car, the space beside your other luggage, and whether you will genuinely pack it each time.

If it lives around the house… Move 2 is our pick

Move 2 offers stereo playback from a single speaker and comes with a charging base. That combination makes sense for a home routine: keep a usual spot for it, then carry it to where you want to listen. We would choose it for the kitchen-to-patio role. This is a recommendation based on its design and features, rather than a claim from a listening test.

If you forget to charge… Move 2 has more headroom

Sonos rates Move 2 for up to 24 hours of playback and Roam 2 for up to 10. Actual endurance depends on use. Consider whether you normally play music for an hour or leave it on through an afternoon. More battery capacity is useful when it removes a recurring interruption; otherwise it may not deserve top billing.

If water is involved… understand the ratings

Roam 2 carries IP67 protection; Move 2 is IP56 and should not be submerged. Check Sonos's care guidance for the conditions you expect. We would not make either purchase on the assumption that an outdoor rating means it can be left outside indefinitely. Plan where it will be stored and charged.

The verdict: home speaker or travel companion?

Move 2 is our choice for someone who mostly listens at home and wants to move a speaker between familiar spots. Roam 2 is the choice when packing and carrying are central to the job. Before ordering, make that one decision honestly. It is more useful than trying to crown the same winner for every listener.
