Buying an e-reader is really a decision about where you will read. Picture an ordinary evening, rather than the holiday you take once a year. Will it live beside your chair, or disappear into a bag every morning? We are comparing the 2024 Kindle and standard 2024 Paperwhite, rather than the Signature Edition or color models.

If you want more space to read… Paperwhite wins
The Paperwhite's seven-inch screen is the clearest reason to consider it. Our view: screen space is something a frequent reader can appreciate on every page. Try your preferred text size on a demonstration unit if you can. Judge the amount of text you find comfortable to read, rather than choosing the smallest lettering that fits.
If your reader goes everywhere… Kindle has a good case
Amazon lists the compact Kindle at 158 grams. That makes it worth considering when you already carry a phone, glasses, keys and everything else. Think about the case you will add, too. The whole package needs to suit the bag or pocket you actually use, rather than a theoretical travel setup.
If you read beside water… look at Paperwhite
Amazon describes the Paperwhite as waterproof. Read its care instructions and water-resistance limits before treating that as permission to leave it in water. For a poolside holiday, this feature gives you another reason to consider the step up. For a reader that stays on a dry bedside table, it may be much less important.
If you only read occasionally… keep the decision simple
Both models offer 16 GB of storage according to Amazon. Avoid paying for an upgrade simply because you imagine becoming a different kind of reader. First think about the books you want to read next and when you will make time for them. The device should support the habit; buying it does not create the habit for you.
The verdict: Paperwhite for the regular reader
Our recommendation is the Paperwhite when the larger page is worth the extra cost to you. The compact Kindle is a sound alternative when size and portability lead your decision. Compare the current checkout total, including a cover and any optional subscriptions, before you choose. A sale can change the value calculation considerably.
